![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The lively book by Garry Wills on Jefferson’s Declaration, which discusses the influence of the Scottish Enlightenment on Jefferson, will serve as our starting point we will also look at Montesquieu and the law lectures of Adam Smith.ģ. We’ll next turn to the ideas, both philosophical and legal, behind the Declaration of Independence, examining Jefferson’s thought, various new interpretations of the Declaration, and the wider background in Enlightenment thought. We’ll read the classic study by Bernard Bailyn, *The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution,* which is the starting point for all academic work in this area. For this segment, we focus on the “pamphlet wars” between the British government and its North American colonists. The Origins of the Revolution, 1775-1776. This seminar will focus on the political and legal ideas that led to the American Revolution. ![]()
